Back To The Future II: What Did They Get Right?

January 5th, 2015 by

In the 1989 film Back To The Future II, Marty and Doc Brown visited 2015, a year that probably felt a lifetime away for them. Now it’s here, we’re taking a look at just what they got right about 2015…

Great Scott! 2015 is here already, who would’ve thought it! If you’re familiar with the sci-fi comedy Back To The Future franchise, which I hope you all are, you may recall that Doc Brown and Marty took their time-travelling car and bounced all the way into 2015, over 30 years into the future. There they found many futuristic inventions, some of which have become commonplace in today’s world (spooky, eh?).

So, just how many predictions did Marty and Doc get right?

The Marty McFly of 2015 appears to have got to grips with video calling, which we all now know and love as software such as Skype and FaceTime. Considering that cellular telephone calling was still a revolutionary concept during the late ‘80s, I’d say this is a pretty good prediction!

Last year was a great year for wearable tech, and it looks like it will continue to take the market by storm into 2015. Marty and Doc saw this coming, though! In Back To The Future II, people are seen to answer their phones with their glasses, an idea eerily close to the Google Glass technology which was arguably a bit of a flop.

3D films have been a regular in mainstream cinemas for some time now, and Back To The Future’s prediction of a Jaws 19 in 3D predicted this for us back in 1989. Although Jaws only spawned three sequels (which was more than enough in my opinion), if it had indeed made it to 19 then we would most definitely be watching it through our 3D specs. 1983 saw Jaws 3D hit cinemas, 32 years before the prediction of BTTF and 6 years before Back To The Future II itself was even released!

The hover board which Marty has a whizz around on is, however, nowhere to be seen in today’s mainstream society, although the rumour mill would have us believe that Hendo Hover are developing them with Tony Hawk. Well, they couldn’t be right about everything, could they? That would just be plain freaky.
