Sex.com not so sexy for owner

By Esther Josiah

About the author:

Having the right domain name is one of the most important things that you can do for your business. A great domain name helps people find your website, generating traffic and helping to drive up profits. That’s why there are so many people willing to pay thousands (and even millions) of dollars for some of the most popular domain names in the world.

However, as one domain name owner has learned the hard way, there may be such a thing as paying too much.

Is an IE coup looming?

By Esther Josiah

microsoft_choice_screen

IE? Firefox? Safari? Google? Opera? Today, Microsoft rolls out its ‘browser choice’ ballot, asking European Union citizens to choose their preferred web browser from a choice of up to 12 surfing tools on Windows-based computers.

This means that millions of people who have never really thought about which browser to use will now be asked to make a choice. Whilst this sounds like music to my ears, I’m still at a loss as to whether it’ll change the “browser war” as we currently know it.

Hosting for Haiti – Together we can make a difference

By Esther Josiah

hostingforhaiti

With 200,000 people feared dead, 250,000 injured, and 1.5 million homeless, it couldn’t be clearer that the Haitians need our help, and urgently too.

UK2 has joined up with other hosting companies such as Rackspace, Go Grid and The Planet to do our part to help in the relief effort by launching a new website – HostingforHaiti.com. In partnership with the American Red Cross, we aim to provide support which may include mobilising relief workers, sending relief supplies, and providing financial resources for recovery.

With the combined effort of customers and employees of all the hosting companies involved, we are optimistic that we can make a difference. And you can too. There is no amount too small, afterall little drops of water makes a mighty ocean.

Here’s how you can help:

1) Donate to the International Response Fund. 100% of the funds will go to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief and Development fund.

2) Spread the word. Add http://www.hostingforhaiti.com to your blog, twitter, facebook, and anywhere else you can think of.

3) Ask Others to Donate. Together we can make a difference.

Thank you.

2010 - A Fresh New Start for your Business?

By Esther Josiah

Setting goals at the start of a new year is the norm for quite a lot of people, but as a sole trader or small business owner it is easy to continue business as usual without pausing to review the previous year and set new targets for the year ahead.

Whilst this might work for some people, I personally think it’s definitely worth the time and effort to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) and write out what you aim to achieve in the New Year. Not only will this give you a focus throughout the year, but you can always check back every quarter or every month to make sure you’re in tune with your master plan.

Top 5 Online Marketing tips for Small Businesses cont’d – Social Marketing

By Esther Josiah

Hi guys,

It’s been like a few weeks since I did my Search Marketing blog post and I would have loved to be back earlier with my post on Social Media Marketing, but unfortunately I have been very busy with work. Anyway I’m back now so let’s get down with some Social stuff! :-D

If you haven’t read my previous posts, you might want to check them out. There’s one on Email Marketing, Affiliate Marketing and Search Marketing.

2. Social Media Marketing

Over the past few years, social media marketing has grown to become a familiar and a somewhat vaguely understood term in the marketing industry. With Facebook boasting over 300 million users, and presidential campaigns going onto Twitter, it is understandable that marketers want to get a share of the pie, and somehow monetize this ever growing media.

Top 5 Online Marketing tips for Small Businesses cont’d - Search Marketing

By Esther Josiah

Hey everyone,

It’s Monday again, the weather’s looking miserable and the weekend’s four days away :( but hey you’ve got my Search Marketing blog post to look forward to! What more can you ask for. ;)

If you’re just joining in for the first time, check out my previous posts on Email Marketing and Affiliate Marketing

Right let’s get down to some Search Marketing. :)

3. Search Marketing

It’s quite amazing that Google launched just over 10 years ago now accounts for a whopping 87% of searches on the internet in the UK and 68% in the US. Internet users are increasingly using search engines like Google, Yahoo, and the newly launched Bing to search for information, products and even companies online. I’ll have to admit that I’m one of those people that enter company names in Google to find their website, I simply can’t be asked to remember the website URL’s of all the companies I use regularly.

As a company, and even more important as a small business, ranking up on search engines is very important (and I stress the ‘very’). Your potential customers are looking for the products or service you offer online using search engines, and if you are not on the first few pages (I never go past page 5) of their search engine results page (SERP), you might as well kiss goodbye to getting clicked on.

Search Marketing is simply ways or strategies you can use to increase your website’s visibility and ranking on SERP.
