Browsers - which flavour are you?

By Andy

Hi all,

I read yesterday that Sony had completed a deal with Google to make Chrome the default browser in its PCs. This seems to me to be a big move since the historic domination of Internet Explorer could be largely put down to the fact that it is pre-installed and ‘just works’ (kind of anyway, yes I am biased).

This led me to check the browser statistics for uk2.net to see the percentage split with some interesting results. I had no idea that Firefox had gained so much market share with our users as the last time I looked there was only a small percentage using it and visiting our site.

Short Tera.CP and VPS.NET demo videos

By Ditlev

Hello - I thought I’d share a few of the new developments we are working on at UK2Group.

A few days ago Nicola wrote about the new control panel we’ve been working on for quite a while. We are really thrilled about it, and can’t wait to roll it out. We have named it “Tera”, and we’ve got this short video ready as a presentation of how it’s been implemented at our US dedicated server brand 10tb.com.

Check it out: Demo of Tera.CP on 10tb.com

Also, as Carlos mentioned back in December 08, the Virtual Private Server Cloud hosting setup at www.vps.net is on its way. It’s been through first and second beta round, and will actually go live within the coming 2 weeks.

See how to setup new virtual private server on the VPS.net Cloud

We have lots of new projects on the way - watch this space!

Best,

Ditlev

New Press Release - UK2 Group Moves All Support In-House

By Nicola

Hi all,

We’ve sent out another press release today about a really big decision we’ve made as a group, where all support functions across all brands will moved in-house.

Here at UK2 we’ve enjoyed in-house support for years now, as we have our own London based call centre, but given the current economic climate this shows that UK2 as a group doesn’t want to let customers down.

Have a read below.

Thanks,

Nicola

UK’s Most Reliable Hosting Company Site … is UK2!

By Nicola

Hi everyone,

Fantastic news!

Netcraft have officially announced UK2 as the UK’s most reliable hosting company site for February 2009.

Netcraft is a web analytics firm which provides research data and analysis on many aspects of the internet. They measure the response times of the 50 leading hosting providers websites each month. The performance measurements are calculated at 15 minute intervals from separate points around the internet, and averaged over the immediately preceding 24 hour period.

In the analysis completed in February 2009 UK2 came second place only failing to respond to two requests in February.

Network Solutions holding domains to ransom

By David Precious

It appears that Network Solutions are immediately registering all domains searched for. In what I consider a highly shady move, Network Solutions have started immediately registering domain names when customers search for them via the Network Solutions website, and holding them for 4 days - effectively meaning that if you checked whether it was available using their domain search tools, you now have no choice but to buy it from them, locking out all other registrars.

I tested it by searching for network-solutions-stole-my-domain.com which was previously untaken, and within minutes, they’d registered it - see a whois lookup for confirmation.

The net community has naturally responded strongly to this, with calls to boycott Network Solutions.

I’m shocked that they could have morals as low as this, no matter what excuses they try to offer they’re holding their customers to ransom, pure and simple.

It appears that Network Solutions are using the same loophole as "domain tasting" (the practice of registrants using the five-day “grace period” at the beginning of a domain registration for ICANN-regulated generic top-level domains to test the marketability of a domain name).

Is UK2 Microsoft compatible?

By Ditlev

UK2 has never been big on Microsoft, in fact when I got to know the company everything we had was based on Slackware – which is pretty much as far from Microsoft as you can get. Lately Dan and his team has begun using Redhat Enterprise for most of our internal servers, but even that is nothing like anything M$ has to offer.

The guys at Microsoft invited to me to their yearly summit in Denver last week, and this post is actually written on the airplane (more…)
