How Startups can Generate Leads with Pinterest

Pinterest is a social media platform where users can share photos and image collections on virtual bulletin boards. Designed primarily for social networking, Pinterest now has become an important marketing tool. Currently, Pinterest has more than 12 million users and is the third most popular social network in terms of traffic in the US.

Pinterest focuses on visuals and imagery, making it easier for retailers to promote their products and services. This social media site becomes a platform where business and consumers meet. In fact, 25% of Fortune Global 100 companies use Pinterest and 43% of Pinterest members said that they use Pinterest to associate with retailers or brands.

Pinterest is creating a buzz with small business owners. It’s a low-cost marketing tool that they can use to create and brand awareness and acquire new customers. If you’re starting your business and want to use Pinterest, here are some ways on how you can use it to generate leads:

1. Post pictures of your products or services and link back to your website. Images are more memorable than blocks of text and can be a great first step to a customer wanting to find out more about your business. Retail stores have maximized the use of Pinterest by posting their various products and merchandise. Clicking a pinned photo will direct people to your website. Many clicks of the photo will drive a high-volume of website traffic which increases sales. A Bizrate report showed that 69% of Pinterest users have found an item they’ve purchased or wanted to purchase on the network, compared to 40% of Facebook users.

2. Run a contest. Create a public bulletin board in Pinterest and let everyone join. Engage your community through a contest. A good example of using a contest to generate leads is Walmart’s Pinterest ‘Pin to Win’ competition. It was launched in an effort to educate people on sustainable living and its blog, The Green Room. The contest increased the site’s traffic by 25% from the previous week. The average visit time of people coming from Pinterest increased to 4 minutes and 38 seconds, a 170% increase.

3. Add a ‘Pin-it’ button to your website. A ‘Pin-it’ button in your website allows visitors to pin the photos of your products and services that links back to your website. This small button can widen your exposure and promote awareness of your business. A study about social media traffic performed by Boticca discovered that Pinterest attracts more sales and more traffic than Facebook. The jewelry retailer found that adding Pin-it buttons in its website increased its sales by 10%, compared to only 7% from Facebook buttons. Also, Boticca noticed an 86% increase of website visits after integrating the Pin-it buttons. The pinning buttons made Pinterest its number one social referrer.
