The Marussia F1 Team’s test driver, Maria De Villota, was hurt yesterday when her MR01 crashed into a support truck.
This was the first time Maria had the opportunity to drive the MR01 and the accident occurred when she was bringing the car into the pits. Reports suggested that the car suddenly accelerated, the wheels locked and the car crashed into the side of the truck – the Marussia F1 Team will update us on this.
The front of the MR01 and Maria’s helmet took the brunt of the impact and as a result she suffered very serious facial and head injuries.
Maria has regained consciousness and is receiving excellent medical treatment from the staff at Addenbrooke Hospital in Cambridge.
A spokesman for the team said: “Maria is conscious and medical assessments are ongoing.” (update from 3 July 2012).
All of us at the UK Group would like to wish Maria a speedy recovery and our thoughts are with her, her family and the Marussia F1 Team during this difficult time.
