Some Domain Name Facts and Figures!

Hi all,

I finally found some time to read a report on the Domain Name Industry that I had on my desk since before Christmas, and as it had some pretty interesting facts and figures I thought I’d share them with you.

There were a total of 174 million domain name registrations across all TLD’s at the end of Q3 2008

This was a 3% growth on registrations at the end of Q2 2008, and 19% growth on registrations at the end of Q3 2007

Actual domain name registrations during the Q3 period were 11.5 million

However, this was a decline of 2% from registrations during the Q2 period, and affected both gTLD’s and ccTLD’s

.com has the highest proportion of registrations followed by .cn (China), .de (Germany), .net, .org, .uk (United Kingdom), .info, .nl (Netherlands), .eu (European Union) and .biz

In terms of ccTLD’s the base was 68.9 million domain names at the end of Q3

This is a 5% increase on the quarter and 26% year on year

The top ten ccTLD’s are .cn (China), .de (Germany), .uk (United Kingdom), .nl (Netherlands), .eu (European Union), .ar (Argentina), .it (Italy), .br (Brazil), .us (United States) and .au (Australia)

These represent 66% of the total

So what does this mean?

Well it’s good news for all of us in the domain name business to hear that there was significant growth in the base from 2007 to 2008, but in line with what’s happening in other industries the decline in Q3 performance compared to Q2 is somewhat expected. The question is how much was down to seasonality and how much was down to financial uncertainty. It will be interesting to see the results for Q4 2008 and more importantly Q1 2009, to see what lies ahead.
