By default, WordPress uses PHP mail() function to send emails. If you want to send WordPress mail from a third-party mail server or use SMTP authentication with your email account, you need to install an SMTP plugin. This is recommended as it allows for full authentication of outgoing mail from the WordPress application and will also make use of any DKIM, SPF and DMARC records applied to your domains DNS.

The settings given in Step 3 relate to our Hosted Email service, if you wish to use a third-party email service you will need to use the settings they provide in place of the ones in this guide.

There are several SMTP plugins for WordPress. We will be using the WP Mail SMTP plugin for this example.


Step 1. Log into your WordPress admin dashboard and go to Plugins >> Add New >> search for the WP Mail SMTP plugin and click Install Now:

 

 Step 2. Once installed, click Activate. Then, go to WP Mail SMTP  >> Settings to configure the plugin settings:

 

 

Step 3. You can find an example of the SMTP setup below:

 

* We would recommend setting the ‘From Email’ to be the same as you will use for SMTP authentication.

 

 

  • From Email - the email address you want to use to send all WordPress emails from
  • From Name - the name that the emails will be sent from
  • Mailer - choose Other
  • SMTP Host - mail.uk2.net
  • Encryption - SSL
  • SMTP Port - 465 (SSL)
  • Auto TLS - On
  • Authentication - On
  • SMTP Username - full email address
  • SMTP Password - password for that email address

 

Enter all the details and click Save Settings.

 

Step 4. To test the configuration, go to the Email Test tab, enter your email and click the Send Email button. Check your email for the test email:

If there are any errors in the inputted information, you will be presented with a message shown below:



 Clicking View Full Error Log will give more information as to what has caused the error, such as an incorrect password for example. This data, along with screenshots of your SMTP settings, can be provided to our Support Team via a ticket so they can review and investigate this further.
