SSL - Paid vs Free

Let's Encrypt SSL Certificates (Free)

Let's Encrypt is a free, automated service that issues SSL certificates for websites.

Pros:

  • Free of Cost - No need to pay any fees for the certificate.
  • Easy Setup - Automated installation.
  • Recognised Security - Trusted by all major browsers.
  • Auto-renew and Install - Certificates are valid for 90 days but auto-renew and auto-install.

Cons:

  • Basic Features Only - Offers no additional security features like warranties or dynamic site seals.
  • Shorter Lifespan - Frequent renewals required (90 days) - this is automatic though.
  • Brand Perception - Free SSL certificates may not instil the same confidence in users as a paid certificate.

DV (Domain Validation) SSL certificates are paid certificates that verify domain ownership and provide encryption.

Pros:

  • Warranty Included - Paid DV SSL often includes a financial warranty, which protects users if there's an issue with the certificate.
  • Enhanced Trust - Often comes with site seals or badges that show your site is secured by a trusted authority.
  • Recognised Security - Trusted by all major browsers.
  • Longer Lifespan - Valid for a minimum of 200 days, though renewals are yearly.
  • Scalable Options - Can be upgraded to higher validation levels (e.g., OV or EV) as your business grows.

Cons:

  • Cost - Varies depending on features
  • Setup Time - May take longer to issue than Let's Encrypt due to manual verification in some cases.
