If Your Build Seems Slow

If your build seems slow

Building a website takes a little while, so don’t worry if it seems quiet. Here’s what to expect, and how to tell it’s still working.

How long it takes

  • A brand new website: usually around 15 minutes, sometimes a bit longer for bigger websites with things like bookings or payments.
A small change: usually a few minutes.
A security check: around 20 to 30 minutes. You can keep working while it runs.

How to tell it’s still working

There are two easy signs:

  • The credits number keeps going up. Under your message there’s a number like -17.5k. If it’s still changing, the builder is busy.
The status line changes. Under the builder’s name you’ll see what it’s doing, like “Thinking” or “Run final error check”.

The square button next to the box where you type also shows a stop symbol while the builder is working.

Get told when it’s done

You don’t have to watch it. Click Enable on the notification bar above the box where you type, and you’ll get a notification when your website is ready.

If it really does seem stuck

If the credits number hasn’t changed for around 10 minutes:

  1. Refresh the page. Your chat and website are saved, so you won’t lose anything.
Check the latest reply. The builder may have finished, or be waiting for you to answer a question.
Ask it to carry on. Type something like “Please carry on where you left off” and send it.

Still stuck? Get in touch with our support team on live chat, 24/7. Let them know the name of your website and roughly when you sent your message.

Tips for quicker builds

  • Give lots of detail in your first message, so the builder doesn’t have to go back and change things.
Ask for several changes in one message, rather than lots of small ones.
Answer its questions as soon as they appear. The builder waits for your answer before it carries on.
